Abstract

Bu araştırmanın amacı Türkiye’de ikamet eden Suriyeli ve Türk öğrencilerin İngilizceye yönelik tutum düzeylerini belirlemek ve karşılaştırmak, öğrencilerin tutumlarının cinsiyet, ailenin ekonomik durumu, İngilizce başarı algıları, anne ve baba eğitim durumu ve babanın mesleği değişkenlerinden etkilenip etkilenmediğini ve bununla birlikte Suriyeli ve Türk öğrencilerin karşılaştırmalı olarak İngilizce öğrenme nedenleri, İngilizce öğretiminde yaşadıkları en önemli sorunlar, İngilizce öğretimine ilişkin sorunlara dair çözüm önerileri konusunda düşüncelerini öğrenmektir. Karma araştırma yönteminin kullanıldığı bu çalışmanın nicel kısmında “Öğrencilere Yönelik İngilizce Öğretimine İlişkin Tutum Ölçeği”, nitel kısmında ise araştırmacılar tarafından hazırlanan ve açık uçlu sorulardan oluşan görüşme formu kullanılmıştır. Çalışmanın örneklemini Gaziantep liselerinde öğrenim gören 273 Suriyeli, 322 Türk lise 9. sınıf öğrencisi oluşturmaktadır. Nicel verilerin analizleri SPSS 22 paket programıyla, nitel verilerin analizi ise içerik analizi yöntemiyle yapılmıştır. Çalışmanın sonucunda Suriyeli ve Türk öğrencilerin İngilizceye yönelik tutumlarının orta düzeyde olduğu fakat Suriyeli ve Türk öğrencilerin tutumlarının ölçeğin kazanımlar, destek ve olumsuzluklar olarak adlandırılan tüm boyutlarında farklılaştığı ortaya çıkmıştır. Cinsiyet, başarı algısı, ailenin ekonomik durumu ve anne/baba eğitim durumu değişkenlerinde Suriyeli ve Türk öğrencilerin tutumlarının farklı boyutlarda değişkenlik gösterdiği tespit edilmiştir. Sadece her iki grupta da baba mesleğinin İngilizceye yönelik tutumu etkilemediği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Araştırmada elde edilen bulgular Suriyeli ve Türk öğrencilerin İngilizce öğrenme nedenlerinin de farklı olduğunu göstermiştir. Bununla birlikte her iki grubunda İngilizce dersi ile ilgili yaşadığı sorunlar ve bu sorunlara getirdikleri çözüm önerileri birbirinden ayrılmaktadır. Bu çalışmada elde edilen bulgular Suriyeli ve Türk öğrencilerin İngilizceye yönelik tutumlarının, İngilizce öğrenme nedenlerinin, tespit ettikleri sorunların ve sorunlara getirdikleri çözüm önerilerinin birbirinden farklı olduğunu ortaya çıkarmıştır.

Abstract

This research aims to determine and compare the attitudes of Syrian and Turkish students residing in Turkey to English, to determine and compare the outcomes of the students’ attitudes toward gender, family economic status, English sense of success, parents’ education, and father’s profession, and to compare the reasons for learning English, to learn their thoughts on the most important issues they have experienced in English teaching and solutions to problems related to English teaching. The research was designed with a mixed research approach. In the quantitative part of the study, “Attitude Scale on English Teaching for Students” and in the qualitative part, an interview form consisting of open-ended questions prepared by the researchers was used. The sample of the study consists of 273 Syrians and 322 Turkish high school 9th-grade students studying in Gaziantep high schools. The analysis of quantitative data was performed with SPSS 22 package program and the analysis of qualitative data was performed by the content analysis method. As a result of the study, it was revealed that the attitudes of Syrian and Turkish students towards English were at a medium level, but the attitudes of Syrian and Turkish students differed in all dimensions of the scale called achievements, support, and negativity. It was determined that the attitudes of Syrian and Turkish students varied in different dimensions in the variables of gender, perception of success, economic status of the family, and mother/father education status. Only in both groups was it concluded that the fathers’ profession did not affect the attitude of the students towards English. The findings of the study showed that the reasons for Syrian and Turkish students to learn English are also different. However, the problems they experience with English lessons in both groups and the solutions they bring to these problems are separated from each other. The findings obtained in this study revealed that the attitudes of Syrian and Turkish students towards English, the reasons for learning English, the problems they identified, and the solutions they brought to the problems were different from each other.
